Quick answer

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making your website easier for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it shows up higher in the free results. Google crawls pages, stores them in its index, then ranks the most helpful and trustworthy ones for each search. SEO improves all three steps, and the same work now helps AI assistants mention you.

Key takeaways

  • SEO means earning free visibility in search results, not paying for it.
  • Google works in three steps: crawl, index, rank.
  • The main types are technical, on-page, off-page and local SEO.
  • White hat follows Google's rules. Black and grey hat risk penalties.
  • Good SEO also makes you more visible in AI answers.

How Google SEO works

Google does three things:

  1. 1Crawling: Googlebot finds pages by following links and reading sitemaps.
  2. 2Indexing: Google stores each page and works out what it's about.
  3. 3Ranking: for every search, Google orders the pages it has by relevance, quality and usefulness.

SEO helps at each step: making pages easy to crawl (technical SEO), clear about what they offer (on-page SEO) and trusted by others (link building). Google explains the process itself in How Search works.

Types of SEO

TypeFocus
Technical SEOCrawling, indexing, speed, mobile, schema
On-page SEOContent, titles, headings, internal links
Off-page SEOBacklinks, mentions, reviews
Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, Map Pack (local SEO)
National SEORanking nationwide (national SEO)
AI search optimizationAI Overviews, ChatGPT (AEO/GEO)

Most small businesses don't need all six at once. A plumber needs local and technical SEO first. An online store needs technical and on-page first.

SEO glossary: key terms

The words you'll hear most:

TermMeaning
SERPSearch engine results page
Organic resultUnpaid listing in search results
KeywordThe words someone searches
BacklinkA link from another site to yours
Title tagThe clickable headline in results
IndexingGoogle storing a page so it can rank
E-E-A-TExperience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust
White / grey / black hatFollowing, bending or breaking search guidelines

What is grey hat SEO?

Grey hat SEO uses tactics that aren't clearly banned but push the limits: aggressive link swaps, or thin pages built only to catch a keyword.

They sometimes work for a while. Then an update arrives and the rankings disappear, often taking the good pages with them. In our view the risk isn't worth it, which is why we only use white-hat methods.
