Quick answer
An SEO company helps your website show up higher in the free search results through technical fixes, content and link building. Choose one that explains its plan in plain English, reports on leads and revenue rather than just rankings, lets you own every account and piece of content, offers short or month-to-month terms, and never guarantees a #1 ranking.
Key takeaways
- Ask who will actually do the work, and how experienced they are.
- Insist on reports about leads and revenue, not just rankings.
- You should own your site, content, Google Business Profile and data.
- A guaranteed #1 ranking is a red flag. Google says so itself.
- Pay-for-results SEO sounds safe but often rewards easy, low-value keywords.
What does an SEO company do?
A good one does six things, and should be able to tell you which of them it did last month:
- Audit your site and competitors (technical SEO)
- Research keywords and match them to pages (keyword research)
- Fix technical and on-page problems
- Write and improve content for your services, locations and customer questions
- Build authority with links, reviews and mentions (link building)
- Report on rankings, traffic, leads and revenue
Questions to ask before hiring an SEO agency
Ask these on the first call. How they answer tells you a lot:
- 1Who will work on my account, and how senior are they?
- 2What will you do in the first 90 days?
- 3How do you measure success?
- 4How do you build links? Can I see examples?
- 5Who owns the content, accounts and data if we stop working together?
- 6What are the contract terms and notice period?
- 7Can you show results for a business like mine?
If the answers are vague, the work usually is too.
Red flags
Walk away if you hear any of these:
- Guaranteed #1 rankings or "instant" results (Google's advice on hiring an SEO)
- Secret methods they won't explain
- Bulk backlink packages
- Long lock-in contracts before you've seen any results
- They, not you, own your Google Business Profile or website
- Reports full of rankings that never mention leads
We've taken over plenty of accounts from agencies like this. The most painful cases are the ones where the business didn't own its own Google profile.
Pay-for-results SEO: is it worth it?
Pay-for-results SEO, also called pay on results SEO, only charges when you rank for agreed keywords. It sounds risk-free.
The catch is in who picks the keywords. Providers often choose easy, low-volume terms that rank quickly and bring in very little business. If you go down this route, choose the keywords yourself, and tie fees to leads or revenue wherever you can.
How to tell if your SEO company is working
Here's roughly what progress should look like:
| Month | What you should see |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Audit, fixes shipped, clear plan |
| 3–4 | More pages indexed, rising impressions in Search Console |
| 4–6 | Rankings and organic traffic growing on money pages |
| 6+ | More organic leads and revenue |
If you're not seeing this curve, ask why. A good agency will have a clear answer. See is SEO worth it?.
