Quick answer

On-page SEO improves each page itself: titles, headings, copy and internal links. Off-page SEO builds trust from outside your site, mainly through backlinks, mentions and reviews. Technical SEO makes the whole site easy for Google to crawl, load and index. Content SEO is planning and writing pages that answer what people search. You need all four, and most sites should start with technical and on-page fixes.

Key takeaways

  • Technical SEO asks: can Google crawl, load and index your site properly?
  • On-page SEO asks: is each page the best answer for its keyword?
  • Off-page SEO asks: do other sites trust and mention you?
  • Content SEO overlaps with on-page: it's the planning and writing.
  • Mobile is part of technical SEO. Google looks at your mobile site first.

The four types of SEO at a glance

TypeCoversExamples
Technical SEOThe site as a wholeCrawling, indexing, speed, mobile, schema, redirects
On-page SEOIndividual pagesTitle tag, H1, headings, copy, images, internal links
Content SEOWhat you publishKeyword research, topic clusters, guides, FAQs
Off-page SEOSignals from elsewhereBacklinks, brand mentions, reviews, citations, digital PR

A simple way to remember it: technical is the building, on-page is each room, content is what's in the rooms, and off-page is what the neighbours say about you.

On-page SEO checklist

  • One main keyword per page, in the title tag and H1
  • Clear H2 and H3 headings that follow the questions people ask
  • An answer near the top, for readers and AI answers alike
  • Descriptive image alt text
  • Internal links to and from related pages
  • A unique meta description that gives people a reason to click

Most on-page problems we find are simple: two pages with the same title, or a service page that never actually says where the business works.

Technical SEO checklist

  • Pages indexed in Google Search Console
  • An XML sitemap and a sensible robots.txt
  • Fast Core Web Vitals on mobile
  • No broken links or redirect chains
  • Canonical tags for duplicate URLs
  • Structured data (schema)

Off-page SEO checklist

  • Relevant backlinks from real websites
  • Business listings that match exactly everywhere
  • A steady flow of genuine reviews
  • Mentions in the press and on industry sites

It's the slowest part to build and the hardest for competitors to copy. See our link building service. White-hat only.

Technical SEO vs content SEO: which comes first?

Technical first. Great content can't rank if Google can't index it.

After that, improve the money pages you already have, then write new content for the gaps, and keep building authority the whole time. For most small sites that's a 90-day plan, not a one-off project, and it keeps going after that.

SEO for one-page websites, homepages and contact pages

One-page websites can rank for one narrow topic, but they struggle once you offer several services or cover several areas. Each important topic usually needs its own page.

Homepage SEO: target your brand plus your main service and location, and link clearly to each service page.

Contact page SEO: show your business name, address, phone number, map and opening hours exactly as they appear on your Google Business Profile, and add LocalBusiness schema. It's a small page that does a lot for local trust.

Frequently asked questions

Is on-page or off-page SEO more important?

Both matter. On-page makes your page relevant; off-page makes it trusted. Without on-page, links don't help much; without off-page, competitive keywords are hard to win.

Is mobile optimization the same as SEO?

Mobile optimization is part of technical SEO. Google uses the mobile version of your pages for indexing, so a poor mobile experience hurts rankings.

What is content SEO?

Planning and writing content around what your audience searches for, keyword research, topic clusters and helpful pages that answer questions.
