Quick answer

Semrush is the broadest all-in-one suite, covering SEO, PPC and competitor data. Ahrefs is strongest for backlinks and content research. Moz Pro is simpler for beginners, Ubersuggest is a cheap starting point, and SpyFu focuses on competitors' paid and organic keywords. Domain Authority, Domain Rating and Authority Score are each tool's own estimate. Google doesn't use any of them.

Key takeaways

  • Pick by the main job: backlinks (Ahrefs), all-in-one plus PPC (Semrush), simplicity (Moz).
  • DA, DR and Authority Score are comparison numbers, not Google ranking factors.
  • A “good” authority score is one close to the sites you're competing with.
  • Prices and limits change often. Check before you commit to a year.

Quick comparison

We use several of these every week. Here's how they compare in practice:

ToolBest forNotable strengths
SemrushAll-in-one SEO + PPCKeyword database, competitor and ad data, site audit, local tools
AhrefsBacklinks & contentLarge link index, Site Explorer, Content Explorer
Moz ProBeginners, small teamsSimple UI, Domain Authority, keyword explorer
UbersuggestBudget usersLow cost, simple keyword ideas
SpyFuCompetitor PPC researchCompetitors' ad history and keywords

They overlap a lot. Most businesses need one paid suite at most, plus the free Google tools (best SEO tools). Paying for three is usually a sign nobody has decided which one to actually use.

Domain Authority vs Domain Rating vs Authority Score

MetricToolBased on
Domain Authority (DA)MozMoz's link index and model
Domain Rating (DR)AhrefsStrength of a site's backlink profile
Authority Score (AS)SemrushLinks, organic traffic and spam signals

Each one is a 0–100 score built from that tool's own data, so they'll never match each other. And Google has said plainly it doesn't use third-party authority scores. They're handy for comparing sites, not for chasing.

What's a good domain authority?

There's no magic number. The only useful comparison is with the sites ranking for your keywords.

If they sit around 30–40 and you're at 15, you probably need more good links (backlinks guide). If you're about the same, links aren't what's holding you back. Look at your content and on-page SEO instead.

Which should you choose?

  • Local business: the free Google tools plus a local SEO tool. A big suite is optional.
  • Content-led growth: Ahrefs or Semrush.
  • SEO plus Google Ads: Semrush or SpyFu, for paid competitor data.
  • Agency: one suite with client reporting built in.

If you're a small business owner, honestly, Search Console will teach you more about your site than any paid tool in the first few months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better?

Neither is universally better, Ahrefs is often preferred for backlink research, Semrush for breadth across SEO, PPC and competitor data.

Does Google use Domain Authority?

No. DA is Moz's estimate; Google uses its own signals.

Is Ubersuggest good enough?

For basic keyword ideas on a small budget, yes; for serious competitor and link analysis, a larger suite is more reliable.
